Filed under: Uncategorized — marybankblog @ 7:27 am

As World Book Day/Week gets nearer, we would like you to start thinking about which books you love.

We would like you to get together with an (adult) member of your family and write a joint book review. It can be a review of any book you like but it must be a combined effort! Please post your review as a ‘comment’.

We will judge the best book review during World Book Week (3rd-7th March 2008).

GOOD LUCK

  2. The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo:
Grace said: The Butterfly Lion is a great book!!! But at the very end it’s bit confusing! What intrested me was the picher on the front and the title then I took it home to Mum and she read it to me!!!!!!!!!!(Mum cried just befor the end!)
Grace’s Mum said: I really enjoyed reading this with Grace! She made a good choice. A lot of what happens in the story, happens in the First World War, but it is not actually about the War itself and only touches on the experiences of the people who took part. It is a little magical, a little surreal and very touching. Yes, I did cry near the end. It was hard to read out loud! I must be a sucker for a sentimental story.

  4. ANDREW:my book review is on a book called south sea adventure by Willard price. I think that this book is the best book that I have ever glanced my eyes upon. there is one particular sentence in the book that I thought was really good and this is it.
“BATS!“ CRIED RODGER THE NEXT MORNING FROM HIS perch IN THE CROW’S-NEST. “I SEE BATS IN THE WATER AS BIG AS BARN DOORS.“
in that part of the passage he was talking about the beautiful giant manta-ray swimming by the boat. i think that I would recommend this book to teenagers and young adults because it is more understandable to those who are older. the reason that i chose this book for my book review is the way that the characters are described and way in which the scene is set.

    {MIKE},MY DAD:

I WAS BROUGHT UP ON WILLARD PRICE AND LOVED EVERY MOMENT OF ALL HAL AND RODGERS ADVENTURES.

Hence why I have encouraged Andrew to read them.Andrew and his brother Christopher really enjoy them being read to them when they go to bed, its the quietest they are all day. LOL.

South sea adventures is great in so many aspects as the description of all the marine life and the way Willard Price brings it to life. Also the way that Hal and his Brother Rodger fight and play and act as siblings do makes the reading more believable.

So will they catch the giant mantas? And how will they transport them? Well get reading….

    MIKE (ANDREWS DAD).

  6. ‘What planet are you from Clarice Bean’ by Lauren Child

I really like this book because the characters are funny and there are great pictures and the writing is not just in straight lines, sometimes it goes around in circles and even upside down. This is one of the first Clarice Bean books with lots of pictures but I like the way the stories have developed and now there are chapter books as well.
I enjoy the Clarice Bean stories because there are characters which appeal to adults as well as children. I can relate to Clarice’s hard working Mum who works in an old people’s home and her Dad who is always at work. Best of all is forgetful old Grandad who sometimes ‘butters his tie into his sandwich’, has a friend with no teeth called Bert the Shirt and on occasions is found watching the lady next door’s telly because it has a wider screen than the one at home! There is even the family dog with the great name Cement!

  7. The Night Pirates – by Peter Harris & Deborah Allwright

Alex: I love the book because there are Pirates in it! I like the pictures, especially the page with all the scared Pirates hiding in the trees. They have guns, swords and other cool stuff! The words are written in fun ways and the book has a funny ending which makes me laugh.

Mummy: This book is a firm favourite with us all! I love the fact the naughty Pirates are all girls! My favourite bit is when Captain Patch (one of the grown up Pirates) shouts his worst Pirate curse at the girl Pirates ‘If you don’t give me my treasure back I’ll tell my Mum’. The style of writing is unusual and keeps us all interested.

  8. E.S.P.
    By Dick King Smith

“I loved reading this amusing book to Zack; it is a delightful story and leaves you feeling good.” Said Granda. “Old Smelly thought he was going to make lots of money but it just goes to show you are best not to trust a pigeons father!” Said Zack. It was a very happy story and I liked the name Eric Stanley Pigeon.

  10. Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen.

It is a story about a family of 7, whose mother is desperate to find her 5 daughters husbands. The girls father is exasperated by his foolish wife (not to mention his uncontrolable daughters). The new tennant of the manor house, Mr Bingley (And his proud friend, Mr.Darcy), causes a lot of excitment in the Bennet abode. A thrilling tale of love, misunderstanding and eventualy, marriges.
My favourite charactor is Lydia. She is silly and giggly. Granny’s favourite charactor is Jane. She is nice and kind to everyone. We enjoyed the book because of the excessive use of adjectives, and the old fashioned family values. We highly reccomend this book to children and adults aged 10 or more.

  12. Lettice the Dancing Rabbit by Manday Stanley

This is the story of Lettice the rabbit who lives with her family on top of a hill. One day she decided she wants to be a ballet dancer and goes off into town to see if she can find a dancing class. At last she finds a class and dresses up and learns to dance. She is picked to be in the end of term show and has a great time. Her family come to see her and are very proud of her. Lettice has had great fun being a ballet dancer but decides she really likes being a rabbit best of all!

I would recommend this book to girls who like dancing. I enjoyed it very much and think that Manda Stanley is a good author.
